Top 10 Harley Performance Upgrades for 2025 — Exhaust, Intake, Suspension and More

Top 10 Performance Mods for Your Harley in 2025

Performance Harleys are built with deliberate choices. The right parts work together to unlock power, stability, and control. This performance guide lays out ten proven upgrades, why they matter, and how to stage them so each step delivers real gains. All linked parts can be sourced from Get Lowered Cycles. We have personally installed all of these upgrades on either our shop bikes or customers Harley. We stand behind these products and the brands we carry.

How To Use This Guide

Every bike and rider is unique. Not everyone is ready or able to take a stock bike and turn it into a performance Harley. Think in stages. Start with the intake, exhaust, and a tune. Add front and rear suspension control so the bike can handle the extra torque. Finish with controls, braking, and setup that make you faster for longer. If your budget is limited, prioritize rider comfort like bars setup and foot controls and suspension before power. Control equals confidence and confidence equals speed.

1. High-Flow Exhaust

Freeing exhaust flow improves throttle response and helps the engine hold power up top. Choose a system that matches your riding. Two-into-one designs typically deliver strong midrange and a clean torque curve. Touring riders may prefer a header plus slip-ons for balanced sound and serviceability. Browse Harley exhaust options like SP Concepts, TAB Performance or HorsePower Inc. You should also consider using a tuner to ensure your engine is running well with your new exhaust system.

2. Performance Air Intake

A high-flow air cleaner complements the exhaust to complete a Stage 1. Choose a filter with strong filtration and serviceability. A forward-facing design may add a small ram effect at speed but consider weather exposure if you ride daily. Keep filters clean for consistent air flow and optimum performance. Our most popular air cleaner systems include Trask, S&S Cycle or Arlen Ness, they all increase air flow and offers performance gains on stock or built motors.

3. ECU Tuning

Any airflow change deserves a proper tune. A well mapped ECU improves throttle predictability, midrange torque, and heat management. Weather you get your bike Dyno Tuned by a reputable shop or use a Fuel Management system, it's important to keep you engine running properly after any exhaust or air cleaner upgrades. If you ride at different elevations or switch pipes for track days, maintain separate maps. DynoJet, ThunderMax or TTS all offer great options to find one that works for you.

4. Suspension Upgrade

Upgrading your Harley's front suspension and rear shocks is the biggest step you can take for real comfort on the road. Particularly for rear suspension start by setting rider sag, then fine tune rebound to control spring return and compression to support the chassis under braking. Explore our top Harley suspension options from Ohlins, Legend Suspension or RacingBros. Depending on budget, you are sure to find a set that will give you better performance over stock shocks.

5. Brake System Improvements

Better braking can make a huge difference between a close call and a major accident. It can also build trust while out on the road. Upgrading or replacing worn out Brake Pads can make a huge difference in braking power. Brands like Lyndall, Drag Specialties or GBrakes offer excellent options to replace your current pads. Floating rotors can also aid in managing heat to avoid warping. If your braking setup is not making you feel confident while riding, upgrade pads first and verify a clean fluid flush. Still not satisfied? Upgrade to better calipers and rotors. Brembo and Arlen Ness offer top of the line options.  For a custom look, Gbrakes calipers can be made to match your color style. Find components in our brakes section.

6. Engine Upgrades - Basic to Built

Depending on what kind of power you're looking to get out of your bike, you can go as simple as a cam upgrade or as bold as a fully built Turbo kit that can reach up to 200hp - We've done both and are here to help you get the right setup. Simply stated -  a cam swap is one of the most effective ways to bring a Harley to life. It often comes either during or after adding an intake, exhaust, or big bore kit. A performance cam helps unlock the full potential of those mods, creating a balanced, efficient setup that delivers noticeable gains. Options like Star Racing 30/30 or S&S 475 Kit can make a huge difference in your riding experience. Shop more Cam options and check out what other riders are saying.

7. Hand and Foot Controls

Comfort and control equals speed. Adjustable levers, grippy pegs, and the right handlebar setup reduce fatigue and put you in control of your bike. Explore hand controls and handlebars that match your shoulder width and preferred wrist angle. With so many options available there is no reason you can't find the perfect bar or hand controls. One of the most popular installs we do in the shop are Kraus Riser and Bar combos. Other brands like Thrashin Supply and Original Garage offer a wide range of hand and foot controls to help you find the perfect set of style and feel.

8. Seats

Stock seats are built for general comfort, not for the miles most Harley riders actually put down. A quality aftermarket seat like a LePera or Saddlemen provides better ergonomics, improved back support, and a more locked-in riding position, which makes a huge difference on long hauls or aggressive rides. It also reduces fatigue and keeps the rider planted during acceleration or cornering. Beyond function, a custom seat changes the whole attitude of the bike—completing a build’s look and reflecting the rider’s personal style. Shop seat options for M8 Softails, new 2024+ Touring, 2008-23 Touring, Dyna and Sportster models.

9. Lighting and Visibility

Seeing and being seen improves your safety riding. LED headlights and turn signals increase visibility without adding draw on your battery. Auxiliary lights aimed low help on backroads and in rain. Our most popular kits include Baja LP6 headlight kits or S1 turn signals. You can choose from different color light options or stay DOT compliant with this kit for Harley models. 10. Tires

Factory tires are designed to suit a wide range of riders and conditions, not to maximize handling or comfort for your specific style of riding. Premium aftermarket tires offer better grip, more responsive cornering, and improved traction—especially under braking or in wet conditions. They’re also made with advanced rubber compounds and tread designs that enhance stability at highway speeds or during aggressive riding. Our go to tires in the shop are a set Metzeler CruiseTecs or Dunlap AE2. Both options are a high-quality tire upgrade that reduces vibration and improves long-distance comfort. For performance riders, it tightens handling and confidence in the corners

Suggested Staging Plan

  1. Stage 1: Intake, exhaust, and ECU tune. Add some extra hp gains.
  2. Stage 2: Suspension and Controls.Get some comfort and style.
  3. Stage 3: Brakes, seat, tires, and lighting. Keep chasing power while adding style and stopping power.
  4. Stage 4: Wheels, cooling, and fine-tuning. Chase weight savings and temperature control once the foundation is solid.

Common Pitfalls To Avoid

  • Mismatched parts: Pair intake and exhaust with a tune. Mixing random components can create flat spots.
  • Skipping suspension: Power without control slows you down and reduces confidence on rough pavement.
  • Over-tight chains or belts: Follow factory specs. Too tight accelerates wear and can add vibration.
  • Ignoring heat: High-compression builds need premium fuel, correct oil, and extra cooling paths.
  • Rushing installs: Test ride after each major change to isolate issues early.
